Thomas Dambo Trolls Tour

If you're coming to South County to visit the two new residents by world-renowned recycle artist, Thomas Dambo, you're in for a big treat! Erik Rock and Greta Granite can be found in Ninigret Park, in Charlestown. If you'd like to make your visit into an extended getaway, we have some suggestions for where to stay, where to eat and what else you might want to do while you're here. No matter what time of year you choose to come see our trolls, Ninigret Park is open (and free!), and South County is always a peaceful and beautiful escape.

Where to Stay:

The General Stanton Inn is newly renovated with beautiful, comfortable rooms and is only a short drive away. The inn boasts a storied historic (and ghosts) and four presidents have stayed there over the years. The tavern at the inn is open for dinner every night, except Monday, and serves a delicious brunch buffet on Sundays. The General's Market is an outdoor market by Field of Artisans - where local artists sell their wares and it's open Sundays 10 AM - 3 PM from Memorial Day to September 1st. 

Shelter Harbor Inn is in neighboring Westerly and features comfortable rooms, an in-house restaurant, Farmhouse Kitchen + Bar and an in-house spa.

The Willows Inn & Resort is very close to Ninigret Park, but is only open seasonally from Memorial Day to Labor Day. They serve breakfast on site, offer a variety of accommodations, have an outdoor solar heated pool, kayaks/paddle boats/canoes for guests to use, water views and picnic areas. 

More affordable options (some are just seasonal) are: A Shore Thing B&B, Phil & Anne's Sunset Motel, Krystal Penguin Inn, and The Wind Swept Inn.

Where to Eat:

The Tavern at the General Stanton Inn is open for buffet brunch on Sundays and dinner Sunday, and Tuesday- Saturday. 

Farmhouse Kitchen + Bar at the Shelter Harbor Inn is open for dinner Wednesday - Sunday.

The Breachway Grill is open all year long and offers a variety of options including pizza.

The Cove is another great casual dining option and it's open all year round, too.

The Nordic is an all-you-can-eat buffet featuring lobster and more in a scenic setting. Only open seasonally.

Sly Fox Den Too is an indigenous restaurant by James Beard award winning chef Sherry Pocknett. 

The Charlestown Rathskeller is a great place for burgers, fries, live music and more.

Monahan's Clam Shack is only open seasonally, but if you're looking for a good lobster roll or clam cakes & chowder, this is the place!

Coffee and More:

Jitters Cafe serves a good, strong cup of Joe and delicious bakery items and breakfast sandwiches.

Dave's Coffee also serves a good cup of locally roasted coffee, delectable baked goods and more in a beautiful setting.

Sandwiches:

The Beach Rose Cafe is a great place for sandwiches for the beach and more.

The Corner Deli is another options for sandwiches and lunch.

Quonnie Farms has sandwiches, baked goods, pizza and is also a great place for groceries and flowers.

Charlestown Mini Super is a mini grocery store, bakery and great place to grab meat or seafood to grill, sandwich ingredients, sides and more.

What to Do:

Head to the Fantastic Umbrella Factory for a fun-filled time for the whole family. Surprise - It's not really an umbrella factory! There are animals for the kids to see including, emus, chickens, ducks, and more. There are shops full or artisanal goods, and a bamboo forest to get lost in. 

Go star gazing at the Frosty Drew Observatory. Charlestown boasts the darkest stretch of night sky between Boston and New York City and the Frosty Drew Observatory is the best place to see and learn about the stars and planets in our universe.

Go for a hike in one of our many nature and wildlife preserves. There are several nearby.

Play disc golf at Ninigret Park.

Visit one of our many nearby beaches.

Rent a boat and go out on Ninigret Pond.

Rent a kayak or a paddle board.

Galapagos Boutique is adjacent to Dave's Coffee. It's full of stylish clothing for men and women, shoes, accessories and more. 

Mills Creek is the cutest little gift shop full of locally made products.
